Actually, it’s the unconditional love we give them that is so compelling. Yes, our dogs often love us unconditionally, but they really are mirroring our emotions. A dog that is mistreated by an abusive person learns to be wary and cautious. When we show them affection, though, they gladly reciprocate. The connection can go very deep, but it’s largely up to us.
The opportunity to love an animal unconditionally is precious. Other than our young children, how often does that happen with people? When it does, that is precious as well.
Here’s what’s happening when we love a dog unconditionally. We are actually loving ourselves unconditionally. Gone are self judgment, criticism, and shame. We feel totally free. Free to be who we are!
