Actually, yes. In the late 1990’s the trend for more manufacturing offshore rose exponentially, because all the inexpensive goods from China gave more of us the illusion of having a higher standard of living. This culminated in the mortgage meltdown of the late 2000’s, which itself was fueled by people purchasing mortgages they could not afford in order to have the illusion of prosperity. Bottom line: We are all culpable.
Bottom line 2: There are way too many humans on the planet. As a species, we have an inordinately high individual impact on the environment. That won’t change. War, disease, and pestilence are generally effective ways of controlling population, but we have done a good job of minimizing the impact of these checks and balances on our population. That’s great progress, but we have not adapted appropriately and continue to degrade our environment. You are correct. It’s not sustainable. One never really knows where the tipping point lies, except in hindsight. In the meantime, each of us must decide how to live our life. Different choices for different circumstances.
