Consciousness did not evolve in humans. Mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and insects all have consciousness. Even populations of bacteria appear to have some level of consciousness. Yes, our human form of consciousness is different and involves evolved portions of our brain, but many species possess highly unique and extraordinary characteristics. Perhaps a particularly unique quality of humans is to be self-absorbed with our specialness.
