Engineers solve problems. They fix things. And they are great at it. This is a different mindset than innovating, however. At it’s core, it can be paraphrased as “What’s wrong?”, or “How can we make it better?” When highly technical people are encouraged to consider “What’s possible?”, and are provided a safe, even fun, environment in which to experiment, their contribution to innovation is enhanced. This can be done in many ways. I have facilitated workshops that get people to jump into their creativity. A colleague set up a fab lab where people could bring prototypes to share with others. The key to success is to have the opportunity to imagine “what’s possible” as a normal part of the culture, not a one-off event.
