For me the key was to explore areas beyond my day to day responsibilities. My research interests got me out of the clinic and onto racetracks, breeding farms, and other areas of equine activities. In my subsequent corporate life I became certified as a leadership and innovation coach, which allowed me to work with people across all functions in the company and engage in activities outside of my core responsibilities. Admittedly, some of my managers weren’t sure what I was up to, even though I was totally transparent. The last one I had tried to put me back in a box, and that was the signal to take the severance money and run!
