Great explanations, but here’s what people REALLY don’t know about herd immunity. It really refers to actual herds of animals, and one of the key features of herd immunity is that many/most of the susceptible animals die from the infection! What’s left are animals that are strongly resistant to the pathogen, either through innate or acquired immunity. This is also true for humans, such as when the first Europeans “ visited” the Americas and killed off swaths of people with their smallpox, influenza, and other fun pathogens. Real herd immunity could eventually be achieved with COVID-19 if everyone totally ignored public health measures, as some continue to advocate. So, I have always preferred community immunity when talking about us folks.
