Here’s an important fact about beliefs. They are mostly rooted in values and experiences. Information generally has little impact on beliefs, other than information that reinforces those beliefs. We see this in politics all the time. You generally cannot change a person’s beliefs using information. It is a fruitless endeavor, yet we do it all the time. So how can you change beliefs? One way is to give people a different experience, one that causes them to reconsider how true is their belief. If you can get someone to open up about their values, or even correctly identify what those really are, then they can determine if their beliefs truly match up with their values. Of course, when it comes to religion, these are quite difficult to achieve. People are highly defensive about their religious beliefs. So, what to do? How about nothing! We all can spend plenty of time on our own stuff without worrying about others’ beliefs, even if they seem irrational and harmful.
