I agree with your central point here, but enough of the ego bashing, already! This is what turns me off about Eckardt Tolle and like-minded spiritualists. The ego is neither bad nor good, and inferences to the contrary are falling into the very trap that Tolle and others are warning us against. It’s the “ego cancel culture” run amok!
Yes, our ego can give us a false sense of importance and righteousness, but it can also serve us by bringing to light the hidden demons that dwell in our unconscious mind. It’s complex, and the frequent inferences to the ego being our enemy creates unnecessary angst in those who try to expunge a completely normal part of their brain’s functioning.
The late Jungian analyst Robert Johnson has some interesting insights into the ego and the role it can play.
