I found myself disagreeing with your characterization of Empaths, until I realized that identifying as an Empath is qualitatively different than being empathic. Indeed, being empathic literally means “I feel what you feel”, but the Empath imparts their own judgment on this feeling, which may differ from how the originator of the feeling judged it. In fact, the feeling itself is the product of their judgment or interpretation of an emotion that they are sensing in another. A feeling is a physical manifestation of an emotion, which is based on one’s perspective and is influenced by a lifetime of experiences in which one constantly judges and interprets those experiences. Those belong to us and no one else, so in the case of the Empaths whom you describe, it seems that their perspective on the emotions they sense in others leads to very unpleasant feelings.
