I suspect that the real story is more mundane and maybe even cruel. It’s likely that Shamins were excellent scientists, first observing which plants grew together, their interactions with animals, and their effects on animals. Then they conducted experiments on animals and eventually humans, probably prisoners first, then volunteers. Of course, I don’t know this to be true, and it’s not nearly as alluring as communicating with plant spirits, but it’s fascinating nonetheless.
