I think people can overcomplicate this question, as intriguing as it is. Firstly, it is clearly connected to the (dreaded) ego, because “I” is in the question. Efforts to separate our ego from the question, therefore, seem misguided. We can get a long way towards answering this question by focusing on our values. These are at the core of our beliefs, and they guide our thoughts and behaviors, consciously or otherwise. That may be one of the challenges to answering the “Who am I?” question, because most people are not that clear about their values or how they show up in their lives (based on my work on this with hundreds of people).
If we want to go beyond ego, we probably should ask, “What am I?” Or even, “What is?” I can see losing a lot of sleep over that one!😆
