I was only able to read the abstract of the paper, but it sounds like one of those studies where they throw mud on the wall and see what sticks. The problem with many of these bookmakers is that serum/plasma levels don’t always tell the story, because the effect of these chemicals is in tissues and cells. It’s interesting to infer cause and effect, but that does not actually demonstrate cause and effect. If you want the real story, you’d need to take muscle biopsies.
The abstract mentioned post-exercise increases in serum CK, which is expected. I would have been interested in serum levels of direct bilirubin, especially 1-2 days post-exercise, which will increase as a result of myoglobin leakage from muscle cells.
Anyway, off to gym. Regardless of the data, my body likes a good workout!
