If what you say is true, then I need to switch sides. Now! If we really become so polarized that it’s a literal fight between haves and have nots, with devastating consequences for the loser, I had better start catching up on Fox News.

I’m not prepared to do this though. I’m not prepared to throw away my beliefs that we can create a society of opportunity for the majority of us. In fact, I believe that we have, to a large extent. The polarization comes from those who feel threatened or left behind. That does not mean that the opportunity is not there. It also does not mean that we don’t continue to have injustice and greed-fueled corruption. We will always be imperfect. I’m not prepared to change sides though. Not yet.
