Interesting read. It seems that this is the problem with identity of any kind. We conflate identity with who we are. That identity is very often based on criteria established by others, with strong contributions from our own highly developed coping mechanisms. I wonder if this confusion between identity and who one really is as a person causes some people to opt for physical gender changing solutions. We are not our identity. Peeling away all the layers we have applied over the years to get to who we really are is quite a challenge, and many don’t even try for fear of what we might find. Thus, the solution doesn’t actually fit the problem.
