As I have learned from my physical therapist, focusing on things like correct posture and activating specific muscle groups can make things worse, because we are overriding our proprioceptive system’s natural responses to changes in muscle length with movement and position. We therefore accentuate the activation or inhibition of muscles in ways that are both counter-productive and even harmful. That’s also why natural movement and exercise, as the author suggests, are so beneficial. It allows our proprioceptive system to activate and inhibit muscles aporopropriately. It’s both highly complex and elegantly simple!
