Just for fun, I looked up the house that I lived in 60 years ago in San Mateo. CA. A very modest 3 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood that astonishingly was valued at $900k 15 years ago. It is in proximity to Silicon Valley, which explains its valuation. Well, today it is valued at north of $2 million, almost twice for what it was sold in 2008, when the housing market last dived!!! Also, it has been a rental since then, currently at $4,500/mo! What a great investment, but it shows how the American Dream has died. The problem is, millennials and Gen Z are still comparing their situation to that myth. One consequence will be continued political upheaval. How can they be led by people for whom it was not a myth, and who have no idea what the new reality looks like?
