Maybe ignore the headlines, but don’t ignore the “inflammatory” part. Intense exercise is associated with increased inflammation, and perhaps this explains the increased coronary calcium scores in that cohort. Another cardiac issue associated with long term moderate to intense exercise may be increased incidence of atrial fibrillation. I am not aware of studies supporting this conjecture, but a cardiologist who had worked with elite athletes told me this.
