Motivation is essentially the “why” for doing something. Leaders do have a responsibility to clearly communicate the “why” for what they want their employees to do. That needs to align with the “employee’s “why”, which at a minimum may only be that they’re getting paid and need the money. One hopes that there is more to it than that, but if there is not alignment, not even for getting paid, it’s time for the employee to go elsewhere. And guess what? They’ve been doing just that, in droves!
