My dad died a week after falling and breaking his hip. The surgery was a great success, except they put him in a postop surgery ward that was not geared towards geriatric care. They discharged him to a secondary care facility after three days, and the next day he was dead of sepsis. A very predictable outcome after orthopedic surgery in an 84 year old man. The surgery was fine, but the aftercare was negligent. And yes, I was there advocating for better monitoring, to no avail. It was obvious that the healthcare system wasn’t that concerned about an elderly man. THAT’s why you don’t want to fall and break your hip.
