Thank you for this explanation, Justin. Yes, that explains compassion so well. Some keys to practicing compassion in a healthy way are to be aware of your motivation and to have boundaries. In my profession ( veterinary medicine ) and of course in human medicine, compassion fatigue is a common problem. There are many reasons for that, including the need to be appreciated, but the absence of boundaries and jumping onto the sinking ship is something that I frequently observe. In many such instances empathy, understanding and acknowledging the other person’s perspective while creating a solution collaboratively, would serve the situation better, with less emotional attachment to the outcome. The trick is being able to understand and choose between compassion and collaborative empathy, according to the situation.
