The desire for control is a fundamental human need, for the reasons you describe. “Tweaking your beliefs” is one thing I like to work on with people. This involves identifying core beliefs that contribute to negative thinking and determining from where those beliefs originate. Often they are from childhood and are essentially someone else’s beliefs projected onto us. It can be beneficial to replace those beliefs with more contemporary ones that are truly ours.
