The evolution of this virus has been through random mutations and selection processes that have favored virus survival/replication over pathogenicity. Not to say that a highly pathogenic mutation could not occur, but that really does not favor the survival/replication of the virus. It’s fascinating, and in hindsight somewhat obvious.
One important lesson is that when a new virus hits humans and spreads rapidly, we really do need to take intense measures to mitigate its harmful impact. The first year or two will be the worst, but that could be devastating. Covid-19 was just a warning. Of course, most people will not heed that warning, so watch out!
