The most important point I got from this is to detach oneself from the person(s) with whom trust and respect have been lost. They have acted in their selfish interests, regardless of the harm it would cause. They clearly are capable of doing it again. They may not be fully in control of their impulses, but that does not matter.

In order to put distance between ourselves and the pain caused by their behavior, we need to put distance between us and them. This can take tremendous discipline. But only then can we let go of anger and begin to forgive.
