This is a well thought out article, and what you say makes sense. What I don’t understand is what are the people who, for whatever reasons, had to work crappy jobs for crappy pay to get by doing now? There’s only so many Uber drivers, and I’m not sure that there are significantly more people in the gig economy than pre-pandemic. I care for my disabled daughter, and I would greatly appreciate respite service, for which we are eligible. But agencies can’t find people to hire. I was speaking with a friend this morning who runs an elder care program in another state. Same thing. Very difficult to find caregivers. Yes, the pay is not great, but it was never great. Nevertheless, people needed to make money. So what has changed? I’m not sure that the answer is here, but maybe so.
