This is really the story of institutional racism in America. It’s all about black people serving white people. I grew up with this imagery, and even though it never seemed ok to me, it was pervasive and generally accepted by the predominantly white culture. That’s what institutional racism is. It’s a cultural norm built on the belief that people of color are essentially here to serve the needs of the white majority. That includes service jobs, entertainment, and sports. It appears benign, because some people of color can flourish in that paradigm, but it is an insidious system of oppression. Thank you for this informative article.
