Todd, there are two distinct types of empathy that are recognized, cognitive and affective ( emotional). Yes, cognitive empathy involves understanding the other person’s perspective and the reason behind that. Affective empathy is sensing the emotion of another person. I agree that this often gets entangled with sympathy, which involves judgment based on the perspective of the sympathizer. It seems that this entanglement is the cause of much distress in Empaths.
