Trust and distrust aren’t simply two sides of the same coin, as you say. In fact, they reflect entirely different mindsets. Distrust reflects a self-protective mindset in which people focus on what’s wrong or what could go wrong. The emotions of fear, loathing, and anger dwell here. Trust, on the other hand, reflects a growth mindset, in which people focus on what’s right and what’s possible. Even in this mindset, people can experience distrust. We’re not blind to what other people have shown us about themselves. We’re also not threatened. That’s a huge difference.
