Twenty years ago the veterinary hospital where I worked acquired phones with two way radio functionality. That allowed for immediate communication, including the interns and residents contacting me at home at any time. It was always a valid call regarding patient care, but it was intrusive nonetheless, and it was one of many factors that led to me jumping ship and taking a corporate position. Once there, I certainly saw bosses who would contact direct reports at any hour, but I did not have such bosses and did not respond to the occasional intrusion when it happened. Unlike in my veterinary hospital days, it was never about anything approaching a life or death matter. It could always wait till the morning. I also did not gain entry into the “inner sanctum”, because they knew I would not play along with their power games. We all have to make choices and understand that they have consequences. I’m happy with mine.
