What do I call the cause? I don’t know! And just because I do not know does not mean that I need to make something up. There’s a lot that I don’t know, but I don’t make stuff up just to satisfy the primitive need for an explanation. And that’s what it is. Our brain tries to make sense of things, and it is very good at filling in the blanks when we lack information.

It’s very comforting to believe that there is this indescribably powerful, benevolent force, God, whatever out there that cares about us, but that doesn’t make it true.
