What’s missing here, and in most discussions about “herd immunity”, is that a significant component is thinning the herd. The weak, aged, and infirmed die off, leaving the strong and immunologically protected. The geniuses in Sweden thought that’s how they should handle the pandemic, until they saw what herd immunity can look like. Sadly, it’s what is happening in India and other countries with poor health care infrastructure. Recently I heard Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy use the term “community immunity”. I like that much better. I’m hoping he will suggest it to Dr. Fauci.
