Yes, and even more fascinating is that degenerative arthritis of the hips also causes muscle pain that is not localized to the hip joint. I had progressively severe muscle pains with painful trigger points due to osteoarthritis in my hips. Now with new hip joints I can employ more exercises to not only strengthen muscles, but rehabilitate the proprioceptive loop system associated with all those muscles, big and small. Imbalance in that system was the proximate cause of my muscle pain, I believe. I agree that the glutes are key to that rehabilitation process.
